I 'The Dark Knight', efterfølgeren til 'Batman Begins' fortsætter Batman sin intense krig mod kriminaliteten i Gotham City.Han havde egentlig forestillet sig, at han kunne lægge den sorte kappe fra sig og dermed få en mere almindelig tilværelse. Men efterhånden begynder han at forstå, at den ikke er så nem at komme af med.. hvis nogensinde. For der vil altid være nye fjender at beskytte byen imod.Der er nemlig opstået en slags vakuum i byen, efter at det lykkedes Batman at få luget ud i korruptionen og forbryderne i Gotham City.
