En ensom rejsende fra år 2035 skal løse en gåde, der kan redde hans folk. men den kan også føre ham til afgrunden af sindssyge. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe og Brad Pitt spiller hovedrollerne i Terry Gilliams sci-fi mesterværk. Efter at det meste af verdens befolkning er blevet udslettet af en dræbervirus, må de overlevende bo i små samfund under jorden.
